Boston knows how to celebrate any major holiday, so it’s no surprise that with historic buildings and that New England vibe, is also a perfect place to be during Christmastime. Here are some suggestions of things to do if you’re planning on spending Christmas in Boston:

Stop by the cobblestoned Faneuil Hall Marketplace to see the towering Christmas Tree and hear the Holiday Pops sing the songs you love (every night through New Year’s). Citi Performing Arts Center is also putting on a performance of A Christmas Story, The Musical from November 20 to December 8, 2013. You’ll most likely come across carolers here, as well as around Beacon Hill and Downtown Crossing by Macy’s.

See the oldest public park in the history of the nation, Boston Common, and its lights display; you can go ice-skating here at Frog Pond, too.

Head to the Boston Opera House and watch a familiar story unfold with top-notch dancers in the Boston Ballet’s performance of The Nutcracker running November 29 to December 29, 2013, with choreography by Mikko Nissinen and all-new costumes and sets.

Visit Trinity Church, Arlington Street Church, King’s Chapel, or Cathedral of the Holy Cross—this last one being the largest Gothic Revival-style church in New England—for music performances or midnight services on Christmas Eve.

Pick up some last-minute gifts at the SoWa Holiday Market (December 14–15, 2013), which has unique and intricate designs from independent artists; items include stationery, jewelry, pottery, handbags, and crafty accessories (free gift-wrapping at the Yelp booth).
